Litteau gets daring for Tour de siblu

Last week the Tour de siblu was in Normandie.

And despite the rainy reputation the region has, everything came together to make this stage a success – EVEN the weather!
But what we will remember most is the great involvement of the whole team – be it during the fundraising events or the making of the Litteau Calendar. Members of the whole team took their kit off to reenact Calendar Girls (and boys!), in aid of cancer research.

The epic Pessac – La Réserve stage

The longest stage of the Tour de siblu took place on the 7th of August. On that day 23 brave cyclists pedaled the 120km that link the head offices in Pessac to La Réserve. Amongst them was Chris Dunscombe of course, accompanied by his 14 year old son, Karim Belahmadi, the General Manager of La Réserve and Leslie Hurst, our CEO. (Read his interview here).

We must admit we were quite unlucky on the day: the van that was meant to carry the bikes got a flat tire, it poured with rain all day, and we even had a few falls. But everyone kept high spirits nevertheless and the day was a real success.
Indeed, even before the start of the day Karim had already raised over 1000€ in sponsorship.
And with the events organized by the La Réserve team (a charity fair, a pool party, a tombola…) and the cake stall that the Pessac team baked for, the final result amounted to 3500€ for that stage.

And the day finished on a very positive note when the cyclists rode in, greeted by the Dr Arnal, president of the Landes regional comitee of La Ligue contre le cancer. The campsite’s restaurant, l’Oustaou, had prepared a giant paëlla for the occasion.

Dugny is fighting cancer

On the 31st of July, the Tour de siblu was at Domaine de Dugny in Val de Loire.

In order to get the maximum number of people taking part, to help promote a healthy life style, we cycled a distance that most could achieve. The enjoyable 15km bike ride was a scenic route around Domaine de Dugny’s picturesque setting. Here is a photo of the riders taken from a belvédère that oversees the Château de Chaumont.

After the morning’s bike ride, many animations such as a car-wash, a charity fair, auctions and cake stalls took place in order to raise as much funds as possible for cancer research. And it was a great success! The teams at Dugny raised 1000€ to battle cancer.

Thank you very much to the teams for your energy and most especially congratulations for such a great result!

The stages in the South: Les Sables du Midi, La Carabasse, Le Lac des Rêves, Le Montourey.

On the 16th of July we rode from Les Sables to La Carabasse, and on the next day we went from La Carabasse to Le Lac des Rêves. And then on the 24th, the Tour went to Montourey.

What with the sunny weather and the warm welcome, these stages of the Tour really breathed southern atmosphere.

And the teams really commited to the cause: special mention to Rick or to Rick’s chest hairs maybe. Against 100€ of donations, Rick accepted to have his chest waxed on stage. Also, the three animateurs from La Carabasse Pierre, Kevin and Jack managed to raise 250€ in sponsorship alone.

Congratulations to you all and once more: thank you!

 

From Pierres Couchées to Les Bois

The first “word” that springs to mind when we think back to this epic stage is : wow!

Be it the performance of our 28 cyclists (please note that the “amateur” groupe had to wait fot the “professionals” for about an hour at the finish line !), the crazy animations that lasted four days, the awesome weather or the final result  that was well-deserved but still very impressive, everything came together to make this stage truly memorable.

 

Congratulations to the teams on both parks that raised a whopping 4100€ for cancer research.

Safety first

Here at siblu, safety is one of our biggest priorities on each and every one of our holiday villages. And even if we are organizing an event that is different from our main activity, that is not going to change!

We have put a lot of thought into the safety of participants in the Tour. Before every stage a secure route is decided on and a member of our team will deliver a security briefing to all taking part.

By the way, to all of you who wish to take part: you are more than welcome, but remember that you must wear a helmet and high vis’ (a high visibility waistcoat or better still: the official Tour tee-shirt!)

Siblu supports: Interview with Leslie Hurst, CEO

At first, the Tour was Chris Dunscombes’ initiative (learn more about his motivations here), but as time went on the whole company became more and more implicated in the event.

Leslie H“ The spirit of siblu is everywhere – even in the traditionally dry finance department. When Chris Dunscombe, one of our senior accountants, decided to give birth to the Tour de siblu in 2011, we thought it was a one time only event. But then he decided to do it all again but to travel between all our parks (and in the meantime we had added another one to the family) so the distance involved had grown.

The teams on our parks as well as at head office were joined by many of our 7000 owners who combined to support the event and increase the funds raised for the charities being supported.

We decided that if we can’t stop him getting on his bike we’d better get on ours as well and we’re still doing that as the event is becoming an annual siblu fixture.

A fantastic example of individual initiative and drive leading us all on to greater things! ”

Just so everyone stays informed of our progress towards our whoping 20 000€ objective, we have decided to give you a monthly recap.    couleur

If all our stages go this well, we are well on track to being 20 000€ closer to beating cancer. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the three siblu villages for their warm welcome back in May, and most especially to say a huge thank you for all the generous donations we received.

What skin type am I?

There’s no denying that we are not all equal with regards to the sun. But at least, if we know what skin type (level of sensitivity of skin to the sun) we are, then we know how to protect our skin.

Experts identify six different skin types based on hair and eye colour, skin tone, freckles and what happens to your skin in strong sun. Fair skin needs more protection because it is more vulnerable to the sun, and therefore more prone to skin cancer.

Read the following list then refer to the chart at the end to know what SPF protection you should be using.

Type I :

  • very white or milky skin,
  • blond or red hair,
  • green, blue or light brown eyes,
  • many freckles,
  • often gets sunburn
  • doesn’t tan

Type II :

  • very fair skin,
  • blond to brown hair,
  • light coloured eyes,
  • many freckles,
  • often gets sunburn,
  • doesn’t tan easily,
  • can get a light tan.

Type III :

  • light to medium skin,
  • blond to brown hair,
  • brown eyes,
  • some freckles appear after exposure to the sun,
  • sometimes gets sunburn,
  • tans progressively (medium tan).

Type IV :

  • Rather dark skin,
  • brown to black hair,
  • dark coloured eyes,
  • no freckles,
  • rarely gets sunburn,
  • always tans (dark tan).

Type V :

  • Dark to black-brown skin,
  • black hair,
  • dark eyes,
  • no freckles,
  • rarely gets sunburn,
  • always tans (very dark tan).

Type VI :

  • black-brown skin,
  • black hair,
  • black eyes,
  • no freckles,
  • never gets sunburn.

UVA, UVB, SPF, what?

Have you ever wondered what the little number on your sun cream bottle referred to?

After explaining how important it is to protect yourself from the sun in our last post, here is another one to understand a bit better how sun cream works.

Most of us more or less second-guess which sun cream lotion we should use, but in fact there is a logic to SPFs (sun protection factors), and we should really be choosing our cream based on our age, the type of exposure our skin will be undergoing and our skin type. Stay tuned through our Facebook page because an article about recognizing phototypes (level of sensivity of skin to the sun) is coming up really soon!

The mystery of SPFs

So : if your age, skin type, and the conditions you are in would allow you to stay exposed to the sun for 10 minutes without getting sunburned without cream; then an SPF 15 sun cream would allow you to stay exposed for 150 minutes without burning AS LONG AS YOU REAPPLY REGULARLY.
However, health authorities agree in advising to use cream with an SPF 30 or more. Do also try to pick out cream that offers UVA as well as UVB protection.

Application tips

If you think that layering an SPF 10 cream over an SPF 15 will offer you SPF 25 protection, think again! Layering does not increase protection, though it does at least ensure that all parts are covered.
On your face, you should apply a quantity of cream equivalent to an almond. Whereas on your body, you should rub on the equivalent of a shot glass of suncream.  But remember : that means “bottoms up” every hour! Indeed, be it on your face or body, the key is to reapply regularly. Most especially if you swim, sweat or that your skin is rubbing against clothes or a towel.

Finally, if your cream doesn’t indicate any expiration date, the average suncream lasts 3 years. Beyond that period, it is less effective. So think of renewing your solar products every now and then. It’s a small investment that’s well worth it.
